Fleming is the MCCAA Athletic Director of the Year

The MCCAA has announced the 2024 conference awards, and Kellogg Community College Athletic Director Drew Fleming has been named the MCCAA Athletic Director of the Year. The award began in 1990 and is voted upon annually by the association's leadership on the basis of institutional athletic achievement, service to the MCCAA, and helping the MCCAA progress forward in innovative ways.

Under Fleming's leadership, the Bruins hung some banners this school year with every team making the post-season, as well as several teams winning championships:

  • The volleyball team qualified for the Region XII Great Lakes District Tournament for the first time since 2017.
  • The women's soccer program were Region XII Champions for the first time in program history.
  • The men's cross country program took 7th at the NJCAA DIII National Championship.
  • The women's bowling program not only won the MCCAA Championship, but also placed 7th at the national tournament setting another program record.
  • Both men's and women's basketball had the best records they have had since 2007, and qualified for the regional tournament. Additionally, the women's basketball team notched a share of the conference title for the first time since 2007.
  • The baseball team won the MCCAA Western Conference title, the Regional Championship, and took 10th in the nation.

Under Fleming's leadership the Bruins had a program wide winning percentage of .720 for the 2023-24 academic year. Additionally, the Bruins anticipate 24 Academic All-American student-athletes, two Academic All-America Teams, and close to 50 MCCAA academic honorees for their efforts in the classroom this year.

Fleming has been active within MCCAA leadership including serving as the Baseball Sports Chair, which is one of the most involved sports chairs in the Association. Drew also serves as the Secretary of the MCCAA, which means he also is a member of the Executive Committee. In addition to those positions, Drew has served on several committees, most recently the Officials' Compensation Committee.

The MCCAA stated, "The Kellogg Community College Athletic Department under Drew's leadership has come to be seen as a MCCAA member that is doing things right. Al Perry, MCCAA Executive Administrator, said of Drew's work at KCC and in the MCCAA, "Drew is creating a balance of fervent competitiveness, with a firm grounding in sportsmanship; and, strong academic achievement, while making postseason runs across the department. That is no small task. And Drew's professional, thoughtful, and student-athlete focused presence on the Executive Committee has been invaluable." These sentiments are echoed by the rest of Fleming's peers as well."

In addition to his roles within the conference, Drew serves on several committees at KCC including the Student Affairs Division Cabinet, the Enrollment Management Cabinet, and the Institutional Priorties - Budget Team which includes presentations to the Board of Trustees. When speaking with leadership at the college, Vice President of Student Affairs, Terah Zaremba noted Drew's accomplishments this year included 100% participation among student-athletes in civic engagement, connecting essential support networks to teams such as mental health counseling and academic advising, all while remaining committed to fiscal responsibility while advocating for critical funding to support Athletics, and striking an excellent balance between the two.
