Bio
Coach Tom Shaw took over the reigns for the Bruins in the summer of 2022. Shaw had recently retired from Kellogg Community College as the Athletic Director and was excited to help shape and stay involved with the Bruin athletic department in a different way.
Shaw spent 34 years in intercollegiate athletics professionally in multiple roles. He has been a head or an assistant coach in an array of college athletic programs throughout his career. Including; Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving, Football, Softball and baseball (12 years) where he started his coaching career.
Shaw is not a beginner to the running world. He has competed as a recreational runner and has completed 2 marathons, 5 half-marathon and over 25 triathlons as an age grouper.
As head coach for the Bruins, Shaw has taken members of his team to the NJCAA DIII Cross Country National Championships each year. Most recently, the men's team finished 5th in 2024 with freshman Julian Borst earning All-American status, while the women's team finished 7th nationally.
Coach Shaw graduated from Olivet College and finished his Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Western Michigan University. Originally from Royal Oak, Michigan and has been a resident of Battle Creek for over 30 years. He currently lives in the Delton area with his wife, Lory, of 33 years and a teacher in the Battle Creek School District and has 3 adult sons that graduated from Harper Creek High School. Turner is a graduate of the United States Military Academy – WestPoint and is a Captain in the Army. Tyler, is an Army veteran, and is currently a Real Estate Agent in the Battle Creek area and is pursuing a Fire Fighting job. Tommy has recently graduated from the United States Air Force Academy. He was just commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Space Force and will be stationed at the Space Force Command Center in Los Angeles to start his military career.
