Women's Basketball Opens Season at Home

Kellogg Community College women's basketball team opens their season tonight at home vs. Community Christian College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and admission is free.  The KCC women's baskeball team enters a new regime as local coach, Sal Konkle takes over. Sal Konkle, formerly the coach at Marshall High School, is excited for the journey ahead. Joining her on staff are Tierra (Orban) Konkle and Alex Holley.

Coach Konkle said, "We will undoubtedly go through some growing pains this season. We only return one player and have multiple dual sport athletes." Returning for the Bruins is sophomore guard, Maddie Edwards (Climax, Mich./Climax-Scotts HS). Edwards posted 3.2 ppg, and 2.7 reb/g last season.

Leading the newcomers is freshman guard, Corrin Replogle (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS). Konkle said, "Corrin has been a leader on and off the court during the preseason.  She has great ball handling abilities and is able to score off the dribble and distribute the ball to her teammates."

Another key newcomer is Mary Whitmore (Dowling, Mich./Delton Kellogg HS) a freshman forward. Konkle said "Mary has been our best offensive threat in practice. She has an excellent shot as well as the ability to get to the rim."

Rounding out key newcomers is Shayla Ardis (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central HS) is another freshman forward that is improving daily. Konkle said, "Shayla has proven to be our strongest inside threat. She is an athletic forward able to play in the post and on the perimeter."

Coach Konkle said, "We had to hit the ground running and I expect to see a lot of growth and improvement throughout the season." Other newcomers include Lydia Schamanek (Cadillac, Mich/Cadillac HS), Maya Walters (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS), Jaelyn Hampton (Napoleon, Mich./Napoleon HS), Allison Biergeder (Battle Creek, Mich/Pennfield HS), Haley Hinds (Quincy, Mich./Quincy HS), Lillian Fulcher (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw), Maya Ruelas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Homeschool), Madison Pettengill (Hastings, Mich./Hastings HS), and Sara Bruns (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern).

Coach Konkle and her team are ready to get to work. "It will take a lot of work and dedication from the team and coaches to gain respect for our program. Our goal is to improve daily so that we can compete in each contest," said Konkle.
