Soccer Battles and Splits Week

The No. 18 Kellogg Community College women's soccer team traveled to No. 7 Schoolcraft College on Wednesday, September 20 where they fell 2-6. Then the Bruins traveled to Grand Rapids Community College on Saturday, September 23 where they dominated with a 6-0 win.

No. 7 Schoolcraft College | L, 2-6

Lydia Schamanek got the game started early, scoring on a penatly kick merely 6 minutes into the contest. Schoolcraft would then respond with three goals before the half. In the seconf half, Schoolcraft scored first, followed by a Bruins goal on a free kick by Annabelle Smith. The Ocelots scored twice more to seal the fate of the Bruins.

Head Coach Levi Butcher said, "Today was a lesson in converting your chances for our ladies. Schoolcraft buried 6 of their 11 chances, and we went 2 for 10." He continued, "Our squad played right with the Ocelots in the middle third of the field, but weren't able to capitalize on the front end when given chances. We will take our lessons learned and apply them this weekend at Grand Rapids."

Grand Rapids Community College | W, 6-0

Lucy Lampart got the game going off a ball from Jenna Vogel in the 11th minute. Then, only minutes later, back to back goals frim Sophia Saunders (Annabelle Smith) and Allison Dietzel give the Bruins a 3-goal advantage. Aubrey Phenicie would score off a ball from Saunders before the half to put the Bruins up 4-0. Smith and Phenicie (on a ball from Smith) buried the final two in the net to give the Bruins the dominate win.

Coach Butcher said, "I was proud of how we started the match today, putting ourselves ahead 3-0 inside 20 minutes of play. Our attack was clicking from minute one, and we saw some really nice interplay, movement, and finishing. A lot of what we have studied on film and worked on in training came out in our play today, which was nice to see."

Butcher continued, "We spread the scoring around, with 5 different goal scorers. Aubrey Phenicie led us with 2 goals, and Bella Smith had a goal and 2 assists. Her free kicks, Allie Dietzels long throw-ins and Sophia Saunders' corner kicks were high weapons for us on the day. The win puts us in a great position to lock up a Region XII playoff seed, but now we focus on a tough run of games."

Up next, the Bruins head to Muskegon Community College on Wednesday, September 27 for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
