Women's Basketball Starts 2-1

Women's Basketball Starts 2-1

The KCC Women's Basketball team began competition earlier this month under the direction of Head Coach Sal Konkle. This will be Coach Konkle's second season at the helm, and she is excited for the growth the program is already seeing. The team is 2-1 to start the 2023-24 season.

The Bruins return five from last year's team, including all-conference forward, Shayla Ardis (Battle Creek/BC Central) who was named to the Western Conference Third Team last year. She was also named Academic All-MCCAA and All-Conference and helped her team to Academic All-MCCAA and NJCAA Academic All-America status. Ardis is starting her sophomore campaign averaging a double-double in points per game and rebounds for the Bruins with 15.3ppg-12.7reb/g.

Another all-conference returner for the Bruins is guard, Corrin Replogle (Middleville/Thornapple Kellogg). Replogle was named to Western Conference Honorable Mention last year. Like Ardis, Replogle was also named Academic All-MCCAA and All-Conference and helped her team to Academic All-MCCAA and NJCAA Academic All-America status. Replogle currently leads the team in assists, averaging 5.7 per game.

The Bruins also return forward, Mary Whitmore (Dowling/Delton Kellogg). Last season, Whitmore was part of the Academic All-MCCAA and NJCAA Academic All-America Team and earned Academic All-Conference individually. She's kicking off her sophomore campaigns averaging a double-double in points per game and rebounds for the Bruins with 11ppg-11reb/g.

Rounding out the returners for the Bruins are two guards: Haley Hinds (Quincy/Quincy) and Lillian Fulcher (Paw Paw/Paw Paw). Both ladies were a part of the Academic All-MCCAA and NJCAA Academic All-America Team last season. and Fulcher earned Academic All-MCCAA and All-Conference honors.

When asked about her sophomores, Konkle said, "I am proud of our sophomores for their leadership, both on and off the court. They are a key part in building this program into what we want it to be."

Coach Konkle was busy in the offseason, bringing in new faces to the program. Leading the incoming group is local talent, Kaylee Glidden (Battle Creek/Pennfield). Glidden is 1,000 points scorer from Pennfield high school and is a guard for the Bruins. So far, she is averaging 26.3 points per game and 31.6 points every 40 minutes played.

Other incoming players for the Bruins include 6'0" post Alana Compton (Middleville/Thornapple Kellogg) who will make huge contributions for the Bruins at that position. Also contributing this year are guard/post Emmersen DeVries (Middleville/Thornapple Kellogg), and guard Antonia Keith (Charlotte/Charlotte).

The Bruins have won two of the three games that they have played so far, dominating Kirtland Community College 100-58 and topping Henry Ford College 81-73. Their only loss is to Macomb Community College by just 10 points.

Great things are to come for this group. Konkle said of her team, "I am extremely proud of this team. Their sheer determination has carried them to this point. We still have a lot of areas to improve on, and keep getting better."

Head Coach, Sal Konkle is joined on staff by assistant coaches Tierra Konkle and Molly Collins this season. For more information about women's basketball at KCC, reach out to Coach Konkle at wbbcoach@kellogg.edu
