Men’s basketball team earns first win of the season over Lansing in conference opener

Kellogg Community College's men's basketball team won its first conference game of the season 90-88 against Lansing Community College on Monday. The score was close and everything came down to the last few seconds of the final quarter.

Leading the Bruins on the court were freshman forward Rasheed Dyson (Chicago/Evergreen Park High School), who had 31 points and 10 rebounds; sophomore guard Tahveayr Boykins (Battle Creek/Walled Lake Western High School), who had 16 points and seven rebounds; freshman guard/forward Brett White (Battle Creek/Battle Creek Central High School), who had 16 points; freshman foward/center Quentin Jones (Madison Heights/Madison High School), who had nine points; freshman guard Dahntae Bailey (Mendon/Mendon High School), who had eight points; and sophomore forward Brendan Brown (Three Rivers/Three Rivers High School), who had seven points.

"A great start for the Bruins in our conference opener," Head KCC Men's Basketball Coach Gary Sprague said. "We trailed by 14 points at halftime, fell behind by 17 early in the second half. But we were able to stop their fast break and cover the three-point arc (Lansing was 5-23 from behind the three-point line). We slowly closed the gap and finally caught up with just under a minute to play."

The Bruins made a serious comeback and fought to take the lead in the last few moments of the game. Every point counted.

"Boykins made one of two free throws with 4.4 seconds left to put us up by two," Sprague said. "Lansing missed a three-pointer at the buzzer and we had our first victory of the season."

Monday's results give the team an overall record of 1-6 and a conference record of 1-0.
