KCC baseball team wins fifth straight conference title, heads into regionals ranked fifth in the nation

The Kellogg Community College baseball team is ranked fifth in the nation in the final National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Baseball Rankings of the season, which were released Monday.

The Bruins began their regional title defense last week after clinching the team's fifth straight Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference championship the first week of May. They bested Mid Michigan College in the first round of the NJCAA Region 12 tournament with a doubleheader sweep on May 12, and will head into the second round of the tournament this week having won 15 of the team's last 16 contests.

The May 12 round saw a 4-0 KCC victory in game one and a 9-3 win in game two, supported by an eight-run sixth inning including a grand slam courtesy of freshman outfielder Tate Peterson.

The team plays next against Grand Rapids Community College with a 3 p.m. start at Siena Heights University on Thursday, May 19. The Region XII Championship Round for the winners of that contest will be held on May 20, also at Siena Heights.
